‘AI agents’ are software assistants that carry out multi-step admin rather than just answering questions. For a UK small business they mostly live inside tools you may already pay for. QuickBooks brought accounting, customer, finance and project agents to UK customers in November 2025, with a VAT agent in beta and features varying by plan. Xero’s JAX was expanded at Xerocon London in July 2026. Document capture and Microsoft 365 and Claude integrations are live, while payment follow-ups, bill checking and automatic reconciliation are still marked ‘coming soon’. Xero currently bundles JAX in plans costing £18-£70 a month ex VAT, but reserves the right to charge later. General-purpose options include Microsoft 365 Copilot Business at £16.10 per user per month ex VAT, with a £13.80 promotion to 31 December 2026, and ChatGPT Business at $20 per seat on annual billing. Meta opened its Muse agent to small businesses on 29 September, but Muse is only available in the US and Canada so far. Pricing is per seat, so costs scale with headcount. Expect to check the output; these tools draft and suggest, and you remain responsible for what goes to customers and HMRC.
