Waymo, Alphabet’s robotaxi business, said in October 2025 that London would be its first city outside the US, with fully driverless rides in 2026. In January 2026 the BBC and trade press reported from a Waymo briefing that it planned a driverless pilot from April and commercial rides from September; Waymo has not repeated those dates on the record, and a spokesperson has since said only ‘by the end of the year’. In April Waymo moved from manual mapping to autonomous testing with specialists behind the wheel, reported at around 100 Jaguar I-Pace cars over roughly 100 square miles, with fleet operations run by Moove. Unlike Wayve’s supervised Uber rides, Waymo wants no one in the driver’s seat. That requires an automated passenger services permit from the DVSA plus Transport for London’s consent. None had been reported as granted by 1 November, and TfL told the London Assembly it was in no rush to publish its guidance. Waymo’s 24 September ‘Vision for London’ post gave no date or fares. For Londoners, treat end-2026 as a target, not a booking date. For businesses, there is nothing yet to budget for.
